After a long time I am reading a page-turner of sorts. A detective novel. But because it is late 1950s or early 1960s Japan, because it is a different world from modern police drama, it is a read into Japan of those times as well. Quite happy reading it. And wish to read more from the author and in the genre. The joys of a completely absorbing read are quite something!
Also, alternating it with a couple of other Japanese books referring to that period quite close in decades- Makioka sisters (late 1930s), A pale view of hills (late 40s? early 50s?), it makes the country come alive through different vantage points to the same few decades.
When it becomes too much, I have Brothers K to return to - which I am glad to report, is past its mid point.

Later, finished this one. Last few chapters felt rushed. It could be the reading, it could be the writing. But as a window, the book is a very interesting vantage point in Japan of that time.
